At Tacos Al Vapor Nueva Italia, our name is more than just a name - it’s a tribute to our roots, our culture, and the traditions we grew up with. Many people ask us why we chose “Nueva Italia,” and the answer comes from a small but historic city in the state of Michoacán, Mexico called Nueva Italia de Ruiz.
Nueva Italia has a unique history that dates back to the early 1900s, when Italian immigrants settled in the region and helped develop the area through agriculture and farming. Over time, the town became known for its hardworking community, rich traditions, and strong connection to authentic Mexican cuisine. The name “Nueva Italia,” which translates to “New Italy,” reflects that special blend of cultures and history that still lives on in the town today.
For us, Nueva Italia represents family, tradition, and authentic flavors passed down through generations. Our goal is to bring a taste of that culture to every plate we serve - from our classic tacos al vapor to our homemade recipes prepared with care and tradition.

How it all started...
We are proud to be a family-owned restaurant with over 15 years in the food industry. Our story began in the early 2000s with a small taco truck parked right outside our driveway in San Mateo. What started as a simple passion for sharing authentic Mexican food with our community quickly grew thanks to the support of our loyal customers and the recipes passed down through generations.
After years of hard work, we opened our very first restaurant location in San Mateo, which is still proudly serving customers today (located at: 602 E. 4th Avenue, San Mateo CA 94402). As our family business continued to grow, so did our dream of bringing our food to more communities. Today, we are excited to continue that journey by expanding and opening our new location here in San Jose.
